The SMART way to start the Year

Greetings friends,

Many people believe that New Year’s resolutions are just a modern, Western attempt to add something more to the celebrations of the New Year, but actually the history of New Year’s resolutions go back as far as the history of humanity itself.

The very first record that we have of people making resolutions to themselves about how they are going to change something about their life at the beginning of a New Year is from the ancient Babylonians, thousands of years ago. They would make promises to their gods, and make sure that they had paid off all debts, and returned all borrowed items. The Romans continued on this trend of making a promise to a god at the beginning of the New Year, and they particularly made promises to Janus, which is where we get the name January.

Ever since the Roman times, humans have understood the spiritual power of leaving old habits behind in the old year, and focusing on new ways to better your life in the New Year. However, according to a study carried out by the University of Scranton, only eight percent of people who make a New Year’s resolution on the first day of January actually manage to keep it all the way to the thirty first day in December. This is a pitiful amount, but I am not really surprised. It can be very difficult to change the habits of a lifetime, and we humans often give up when we believe that we are going to fail anyway.

That is why I believe that it is time for us to start making SMART decisions about the way that we create New Year’s resolutions. That’s right: although the SMART model is viewed as really essential within the business world, there is absolutely no reason why you cannot export those ideals and use them in a different setting. With love and peace

Technique Of The Month
– January 2015 –

How To Make It SMART:

–    be Specific.
It is all very well saying that you want to lose weight, but that is so vague that there is no way that you can keep to it. Instead, pick a target weight. If you would like to be nicer to people, then you will need to be specific. Pick a particular person to be nicer to.

–    make it Measureable.
Unless you can understand your success, you may view yourself as a failure. That is why your New Year’s resolution must be measureable: getting to a certain dress size, for example, or giving a certain amount of money to charity.

–    make it Attainable.
If you only receive four weeks a year off from your work, then making a New Year’s resolution to visit twenty countries in the year of 2015 is not really that attainable. You will need to think clearly about how you approach your resolutions.

–    be Realistic about your goals.
If you can barely run across the street now, it is unlikely that you will be able to run the marathon this year. Being realistic about your goals doesn’t mean thinking small, but it does mean thinking about the steps that you need to achieve, and making them goals.

–    put a Time limit on it.
Anyone can do anything if they had fifty years – but six months? That’s really impressive. Setting a time limit for your New Year’s resolution within the next year is a great way to test yourself.

I suggest yo do this for every goal that you want to achieve for this year. Start with small and easy one’s where you get instant feedback and then move on to bigger and more complex one.
